CHRIS'S PINK VIVALO
Chris is a bike messenger in New York who I met randomly over the summer at Manhattan Velo, months after his move from Texas.  I saw him again last weekend at Cranksgiving, along with his newly acquired Vivalo which he uses as his everyday commute/work bike.  Looks like a fun ride. BIKE/PORTRAIT - TOMPKINS SQUARE PARK
Snapped a couple of quick ones of some riders at Cranksgiving before the race started. I was going to convert them to black and white, but then I realized I would have lost the whole Autumn in New York feel.  Come winter — more black and white.  Hope you like em.   (Photos © Angelo Calilap 2010)

SPOTLIGHT: Mat's Continuum Track
Mat’s had his Continuum for a while, and I never got a chance to take some “proper” photos of it until this past weekend.  Representing his hometown of Austin with the Mellow Johnny’s stem cap, along with a dangling Mr. Tofu hanging from the seat-post add his personal touch to his steed.  For more info on the frame, visit Continuum Cycles, or better yet, visit the...

BACK ON BOARD Before riding bikes, I spent the majority of my childhood (and most of my adults years) skateboarding.  Call me your typical trade-your-board-in-for-a-fixed-gear guy, but after a while it just wasn’t the same for me anymore.  To each his own.  Once in a while you’ll still catch me on 52mm wheels skitching on 14th street, but for the most part, currently, 700’s are...

CRANKSGIVING NYC
I stopped by Tompkins Square Park to shoot some photos of the start of this year’s Cranksgiving alleycat. Over 200 riders registered, making it the biggest once in New York City thus far.  I couldn’t stay long after the race started due to this damn bug that I’m fighting, but looks like it was an awesome turnout.  Hope everyone rode fast, fun, and safe.  Here’s the snaps. ...

BIKE CHECK 212 | EPISODE 03 ROMEO REX & HIS CANNONDALE TRACK I shot this footage of Rex over the summer in hopes that episode 03 would be all 3 homies with 3 different Tannondale Cracks.  Then I thought about the likelihood of that actually happening, as well as finding the time to shoot it, and by that time it would probably be 2012.  So here’s Rex and his glacier blue beauty...

THEY REALLY DID IT!
Heath Kirchart and Jeff Vallee successfully completed their 3,303 mile journey from Los Angeles to New York in 53 days with 227 hours on the saddle!  I’ve been keeping up to date with their trip (via twitter) since it began and I think it’s pretty bad-ass to be able to say that you rode your bike across the damn country.  A million congratulations! CUSTOM14 WORKSHOP
14 Bike Co’s new custom bike builder is tons of fun, and I love the fact that you can use real components.  Can’t wait to see the final product once it’s out of beta, and maybe with a few more parts added to the lists.  Build your custom 14 Bike here.  In the meantime, here’s some quick and fun builds from your humble narrator. The 14BikeCo-mmuter. 49/14Bike The...

ONE YEAR AGO, TODAY: WNW QUEENS RIDE Last year’s WNW rides throughout the boroughs was definitely a fun time.  Here’s a little video I did of the ride from Trackstar(R.I.P.) in the LES, to Kissena Velodrome in Queens, with Kyle and Massan leading the way.  Good times, for sure.

JUST ANOTHER SATURDAY
Today was probably the nicest day in a couple of weeks, so we decided to do a leisurely lap around Central Park before heading down to the East Village at Cafe 81 (again).  Hope you all logged some miles in today, New York!

PDL Kissena Meetup
After a long week, sometimes the best thing to do on a Friday night is order some Bon Chon chicken and edit photos from the week.  Here’s some of my favorites from the PDL meetup at Kissena.  More on the way soon. The Don, himself. Keirin!  I love how the trick bike was picked to be the pacer. Frankie Flaco sprinting to the finish!

KUSAKA
Kinfolk just posted some amazing images on their Facebook Page of their master framebuilder, Kusaka. Here’s a quick blurb from the Kinfolk site about the craftsman: “Kusaka has spent his life building bicycles by hand for Keirin racers. In the boom of fixed gears craziness,it is easy to dismiss these things as just another fad, it is easy to throw their names around, talk about...

SPOTLIGHT: Patrick's Supercorsa Pista
Now that you’ve met Patrick, meet his Cinelli Supercorsa Pista.  He built this beast up perfectly with Campy and Cinelli components (though the day I took this photo he had on a Nitto cockpit) and it has to be one of the lightest steel track bikes I’ve ever picked up.  I can only imagine how it is riding it.  Congrats on your green machine, Patrick. Spotlight: Phil's Flossin' Rossin
The homie Phil just posted some new flicks of his Flossin Rossin.  This thing is so damn sexy that I’m contemplating on whether to keep it real with steel or go modern with crab0n for my road bike purchase next year.  Check out more on his blog. (Photos © Phil G.)

Miles I’ll admit that I’m a sucker for long(er) rides on my track bike, and if there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s making sure to pack light, and that function is more important than fashion. Props to both of these guys for riding 270 miles in 2 days, with (what appears to be heavy) bags, riser bars, cut-off jeans, and sneakers.  If I were ever to try an adventure...

Neighbors - Dylan Bigby (Trailer) Neighbors is a documentary series about individuals in San Francisco doing their thing.  I met Dylan briefly when the Macaframa crew visited New York last year, and it looks like this episode will be focusing on his work on retired belts.  Looking forward to this series for sure.

SURFACE CREW PORTRAITS (1 of 2)
Korea has been hitting the scene hard in the past couple of weeks, with new trick videos from SFG and DK’s Seoul Got Soul series dropping soon, so I decided to holler at Surface to take some snaps of some of their crew members representing Korea here in New York City.  Stay tuned for the next set. LUIS AND MY HIS COLNAGO PISTA On the way to meet a friend for a quick stroll, coffee, and photos, I came across Luis, who purchased my Colnago Pista from me a while back.  Glad to see it was built with awesome components, as well as getting some action in the streets.  Treat her well, Luis!   (PHOTOS © ANGELO CALILAP 2010)
